About ISS – Ínclita Seaweed Solutions
ISS is an innovative and sustainable Portuguese marine biotech startup, dedicated to the discovery, development, production and commercialisation of sustainable and innovative ingredients derived from seaweeds, tailored to the needs of customers in cosmetics, nutraceuticals and pet care. ISS is a spin-off from CIIMAR and is well funded and supported by a lead investor which is a sizeable independent VC firm in Portugal with proven experience in successfully propelling Iberian startups into international markets.
Role summary
We are seeking a skilled and experienced hands-on Analytical Lab Technician to join our R&D team, to directly contribute to ISS’ products development and validation of functional claims. The Analytical Lab Technician will be responsible for the determination of bioactive potential of seaweed extracts/ ingredients for cosmetic and nutraceutical markets. Knowledge in cell based assays and microbiology assays are a very welcoming plus. This position requires precision, critical thinking, responsive behaviour, organization and responsibility.
You will be a valuable member of the ISS R&D analytical department development unit, a highly promising marine biotech startup based in Portugal. You will think and operate strategically building a new products line, supporting the company’s strategic goals and roadmap.
Where you fit in
You will be part of ISS’s R&D Team. You will actively contribute to the R&D operations for the development of novel seaweed-based ingredients. Your input will be essential to assure our quality standards.
What is the role?
- Perform biochemical assays, such as antioxidant assays (DPPH, ABTS, FRAP, ORAC), enzyme inhibition assays (e.g., elastase, tyrosinase, hyaluronidase, collagenase, …); biochemical composition assays (protein, phenolic content, etc..).
- Perform microbiological assays (growth inhibition, disc diffusion, microbial viability tests).
- Perform simple cell culture assays such as cytotoxicity and viability assays.
- Support execution of quality control and stability assays.
- Analyse and report analytical and bioactivity data with accuracy.
What we need from you?
To succeed in this role, you will have the following:
Skills:
- BSc, MCs degree in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Pharmacy, Biotechnology, Biology, Biomedical Sciences, or Engineering related field.
- Hands-on experience of 2 years minimum (mandatory).
- Experience on spectrophotometric bioactivity assays (e.g., antioxidant, enzymatic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial).
- Knowledge of microbiological basics (aseptic technique, culture maintenance).
- Ability to follow SOPs and ensure reproducible results.
- Good data handling and reporting skills.
- Strong organizational and problem-solving mindset.
- Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team.
Nice to have:
- Industrial Experience.
- Experience with basic mammalian cell culture techniques (sterile handling, media preparation, subculturing).
- Knowledge of ISO methods for cosmetic and nutraceuticals claim substantiation.
