With the opening of its first biorefinery in Portugal, Ínclita Seaweed Solutions moves seaweed science from the lab to production scale, opening the InAlgae® portfolio and its co-development capacity to formulators across Europe
Founded in 2018, Ínclita Seaweed Solutions is built on a team whose expertise in seaweed biochemistry spans more than two decades, decoding what seaweed can do for us. In the second half of this year, that knowledge took on a new dimension. With the opening of its biorefinery in Portugal, the first dedicated facility of its kind in the Iberian Peninsula and among only a handful in Europe, the company moves from the lab to production scale.
The plant gives Ínclita full control over every step, from raw seaweed to finished cosmetic active, with extraction, purification and formulation all happening under one roof. On-site processing protects the integrity of the most delicate compounds, so what reaches formulators performs exactly as intended. It also gives the company the capacity to scale with rising demand, without compromising the scientific rigour that has always defined its work.
A True Biorefinery, Built for Zero Waste
Because it operates as a true biorefinery, the plant is designed to draw the fullest value from every batch of biomass. Rather than isolating a single compound and setting the rest aside, Ínclita repurposes the same seaweed through successive stages, drawing out one fraction after another until, ideally, nothing is wasted. This cascading approach turns a single raw material into a resource with relevance well beyond personal care, opening the door to applications across other industries.
The timing is deliberate. Demand for seaweed actives is climbing, and with upcycling now a priority across the industry, Ínclita’s zero-waste model speaks directly to where ingredient sourcing is heading. It reflects the ambition behind this step: to become a European reference point for seaweed actives.
The InAlgae® Portfolio
At the heart of this move sits InAlgae®, the brand under which Ínclita has already launched five distinct actives. Each targets a different concern in skin longevity, currently spanning hyperpigmentation, redness, hydration and cellular renewal. Behind these five ingredients are seven seaweed species, each chosen for the specific bioactives it contributes. It’s about matching the right compound to the right concern rather than reaching for volume, giving formulators a coherent toolkit rather than a scattering of isolated ingredients.
The most recent addition, InAlgae® GLO, shows the approach in action. A biopolymer-mineral system, it exfoliates, hydrates and soothes the skin from the very first use. It reflects Ínclita’s conviction that seaweed’s value lies in its complexity and its ability to deliver several benefits at once.
Open to New Collaborations
With the biorefinery now operational, that production capacity is open to the market, whether formulators are drawn to the existing InAlgae® portfolio or to something entirely their own. Ínclita has already co-developed four new actives alongside partners, proving its doors are genuinely open to tailor-made work.
